Artist: Spotlight

Nitin Dutt

As an artist, I have subjected myself to diverse media. My endeavors range from sculpture, performance, drawing/painting, photo documentation, film and architecture. While continuously experiencing displacement, such a journey is an outcome of an immense internal compulsion to reclaim a sense of identity. Affected by such a personal churning, nostalgia has emerged as a dominant emotion, accompanied with an ever increasing sense of loss, emptiness and confusion.

My art and its process stand witness to the passage of time. Presently, I am unable to comprehend time as a quality, quantity, degree or a value. For me time is an omni present constant that silently lurks amidst of most of my imagery. At moments it resonates of surfaces and layers, becoming palpable. I attempt to embed my experiences among such layers of paint and other medium.

The relentless and repetitive act of mark making is therapeutic. While engaging in this act of recording every moment, I am transported into a spiritual trance. Once out of these highly meditative and transformative sessions, my perception of the mundane is determined by means of individuals who share immediate physical and emotional proximity with me. During such intervals, stories and experience seep through and register themselves in my art.

My work represents a compromise between my sincere conviction and multivalent yet restless thoughts. I tirelessly engage in the tedious act of mark making and at moments snap out of it to consciously construct my imagery. I intentionally tend to “separate” physical space in my works into two or more different realms, a notion that parallels the disparity that exists between my origin and present state of displacement.
